Don’t Miss One of the Best Parts of Living in Johnson County

In less than a month we will once again be loading up our Big Yellow Truck with more than 50 POUNDS of candy and heading to downtown Olathe.  Why?  One of the best events of the year: The Johnson County Old Settler’s Parade.  The Johnson County Old Settlers Parade is the largest parade in the state of Kansas and never disappoints as a fun, family-friendly event for all ages.

The parade takes place on September 8, 2018 and begins around 8am, but get there early to get a good seat and to get goodies like the candy our technicians will be giving out along the route.  The parade route begins at the corner of KANSAS and LOULA Streets, goes EAST to CHESTNUT then NORTH to PARK then EAST and ends at BUCHANAN Street.

This is without a doubt one of our favorite events along with the Jared Coones Pumpkin Run where we get to meet and connect with our clients at a fun event and just give away free stuff!

The 5 Warning Signs It’s Time to Clean Your Dryer Vent

dryerventcleaning

dryerventcleaningImagine waking up to see that your house is on fire—and then to find out later that the fire could have been easily prevented. The culprit: You needed a dryer vent cleaning! According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2010-2014, U.S. municipal fire departments responded to an estimated 15,970 home fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines each year.

These fires resulted in annual losses estimated at 13 civilian deaths, 440 civilian injuries, and $238 million in direct property damage.

So how do you know if your dryer vent system is clogged and perhaps a ticking time bomb?

Check out our list below of 5 Warning Signs that it’s Time to Clean Your Clothes Dryer Vent.

1. Drying time for clothes takes longer and longer.

When a dryer vent is clogged, the drying cycle can double or triple in time. You’ll notice that clothes are not completely dry at the end of a regular cycle. A dryer is designed to push out the hot moist air for clothing to dry. If your vent is blocked by lint, the air will stay in your dryer keeping your clothes hot and moist. And when it takes twice as long to dry clothes, your dryer runs longer, putting more wear and tear on it and therefore cutting the machine’s life in half.

2. Your clothing and the outside of the dryer are very hot.

Do you notice that your clothing is very hot at the end of a cycle or the dryer is hot to touch? This warning sign means the vent is not exhausting properly. If your system is clogged, it not only wastes energy, but can cause the heating element and blower in the dryer to wear out faster.

3. You notice a burning smell.

When you run your dryer do you smell a burning odor? Lint, which is very flammable, can build up in the exhaust tube, lint trap and even in the drum casing. If it gets too hot, it can catch on fire, causing a burning smell.

4. The vent hood flap doesn’t open properly.

Another visual red flag that you’re due for a cleaning: You can see lint or debris around the dryer hose or outside vent opening: or the duct hood flap does not open as it is designed to do. An outside vent that doesn’t open when the dryer is running means air flow has been restricted due to lint buildup.

5. It’s been longer than a year since your last inspection.

Dryer vent ducts should be inspected at least once a year to reduce the risk of fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Study Finds MicroPower Guard Dramatically Reduces Risk of Influenza Infection

influenza-micropowerguard

micropowerguard air cleanerIn a study done by Environmental Health and Engineering, Inc.* researchers set out to measure the potential exposure benefits of whole house high efficiency in-duct air cleaners for sensitive subpopulations such as those who have asthma or severe allergies.  The results indicated that the use of high efficiency in-duct air cleaners provide an effective means of controlling allergen levels not only in a single room, like a portable air cleaner, but the whole house.

The National Environmental Education and Training Foundation recommends the use of portable air cleaners in bedrooms of asthmatics.  While the use of portable air cleaners in the bedroom did prove to be beneficial in the study, the researchers found that in reality, the use of high efficiency in-duct air cleaners provide a more effective means of controlling allergen levels and the influenza virus not only in a single room, but the whole house.

Perhaps the most interesting result from the study involves the estimation of the risk of influenza infection from an individual who remains in the home over the course of a five-day infectious period with someone who currently has the illness.  Since influenza can trigger asthma, the researchers were interested in the effect of high efficiency filters on the transmission of the illness.

The study assumed that the infectious individual spent one-half of their time in the bedroom and the other half in the family room, while a healthy individual spent 69% of the corresponding time indoors at the home during which they were exposed to the house-wide average concentration of quanta in air.  For this scenario, the risk of infection by influenza was greater than 30% in the ventilation configuration with a portable air cleaner in both of the two rooms frequented by the infectious individual.  In comparison, the risk of infection was less than 4% for the high efficiency in-duct system.

The “high efficiency air cleaner” used in this study was a high efficiency electrostatic air cleaner with HEPA-like removal efficiency for aerosols.  One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning has this product for your home as well as more options that add even more protection for the health of your indoor air.

New Way to Help the Jared Coones Memorial 5K Pumpkin Run/Walk

One Hour Pumpkin Run

One Hour Pumpkin RunFor the past 19 years the annual Jared Coones Memorial 5K Pumpkin Run/Walk has celebrated family and community by coming together to honor the lives of Jared and Jayne Coones and their courageous battles against cancer while also raising money to support cancer patients and their families!

They’ve grown from a humble 550 participants in their first year to over 3,600+ participants in 2016 and they have raised over $700,000 with 100% of the proceeds going to local charities! The mission of the Pumpkin Run is not to be the biggest 5K in Kansas City but to be the best family event in the area.

They have seen the vision and passion for this event embraced by thousands of caring volunteers, sponsors and participants; which is evident by the fact that many of their sponsors, participants and volunteers have been with them from the very start. They not only continue to come back but also bring their family and friends with them for incredible growth each year.

Today we welcomed Tom Coones, loving husband, father, and friend to One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning this morning for our technicians’ training to tell his story and explain to us the joy he has for this special day. He also provided us with details on how to register to join this AMAZING event.

As a sponsor for the last 9 years, we continue to support this event and we ask for your support as well. With that being said, we will be collecting any financial contribution during our service/maintenance calls; no obligations of course, however, any donation big or small goes a long way.

We are so glad to have had Tom come in and welcome him back anytime. If you would like more information on the story or the 5K event, you can click on the link and it will direct you to the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/PumpkinRun/ OR their website http://www.pumpkinrunwalk.org/

Popular Psychiatrist Recommends Annual Duct Cleaning and Hepa Filters to Help Combat Depression

amindofyourown

Dr. Kelly Brogan, a Board certified Psychiatrist and a practitioner of integrative holistic medicine, said in her book “A Mind of Your Own: The Truth About Depression and How Women Can Heal Their Bodies to Reclaim Their Lives,” that in order to combat the toxic fumes from furniture, electronics, and household goods that can affect your health people should do the following:

  1. Ventilate your home well and install HEPA air filters if possible.
  2. Change your air-conditioning and heating filters every three to six months.
  3. Get the ducts cleaned yearly.
  4. Avoid air deodorizers and plug-in room fresheners.
  5. Request that people take off their shoes when they enter your house.
  6. Reduce toxic dust and residues that you cannot see or smell from furniture, electronics, and textiles by using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.
  7. Keep as many plants in your home as possible, as they naturally detoxify the environment.  Spider plants, aloe vera, chrysanthemums, Gerbera daisies, Boston ferns, English ivies, and philodendrons are good choices.  Use fifteen to twenty plants per 1,800 square feet.

Dr. Brogan’s book links nutrition, toxic environments and activity levels to depression as well as other common health issues.  Her goals for people to help to heal themselves include:

  • Introduce a new way of nourishing your body through the foods you eat.
  • Green your home and environment, divorcing yourself from the modern love affair with toxicants.
  • Incorporate a daily meditative practice into your life, one that stimulates the body’s natural relaxation response and paves the way for lasting transformation.
  • Prioritize getting routine restful sleep and adequate exercise throughout the week.

At One Hour, we have seen the benefits of cleaning the air in your home.  Our homes are so “tight” that indoor air quality is much more polluted than outdoor air due to the chemicals in our homes.  For this reason, we offer duct cleaning, duct sealing and high quality HEPA and MicroPower Air Filters to clean the air of toxins, dust and allergens.
